In 1887, Emperor Menenlik II moved his capita] from the town
of Ankober to the cool heights of Mt. Entoto which commanded a
breathtaking view of the future site of Addis Ababa. Addis
Ababa, which means "New flower" in Amharic, rose from its
humble begin- nings to become the diplomatic capital of
Africa. |

It is now .the
permanent seat of many continental and international
organizations like the United Nations Economic Commission for
Africa (ECA), The African Union (AU), and over 100 embassies.
The most interesting places to visit in Addis Ababa include the
Africa Hall with its stained glass mural depicting African
history, the Archeological & Eth- nological Museum, Trinity
Cathedral, Menelik's Mausoleum and Merkato, the biggest open air
market in Africa.. |
